Fire on Ice

« Last Post | Next Post »

A heartfelt post on how much I love the Winter Olympic Games was lost (lucky you), so you'll have to settle for this: I fucking love the Winter Olympics. The end.

These '06 games are off to a great start. Here's my two cents on the first few days of my favorite international spectacle:

Gay Gay Gay

  • Friday night's televised opening ceremonies -- a spectacle (there's that word again) so gay and silly, and yet so awe-inspiring -- knocked my socks off. There was literally so much fire that you have to call the event flaming. I spent the first few hours with a few co-workers, and we offered running commentary on the decidedly odd performances and the fashions of the parade of nations. I made it home somewhere between "K" and "U" and watched the rest of the parade and ceremonies with my housemate. At times, very cheesy, but so fun. Yoko Ono? Bad. Susan Sarandon? Out of place. Peter Gabriel? Scary-looking, but still has that amazing voice. But the real questions I am left with: Who designed the Power Ranger outfit for the dude who started the ceremonies? What was up with the disco soundtrack during the parade of nations? (In case you missed them, you can view a very US-centric photo gallery on the Detroit Free Press' website.)

Bode Bode Bode You Look Better Naked

  • Yeah, yeah. Drunk skier Bode Miller is hot. We all know this. I give him five more minutes until he's grotesquely adored to Jake Gyllenhall proportions, and I deem him overrated and undesirable. (I'm already starting to favor Skier/Footballer/Model/Playboy Jeremy Bloom -- even if he's dating The Real World San Diego's Cameran.)

  • Kwan is gone. The overrated -- but extremely cute -- twenty-five-year-old American skater withdrew from the Olympics just this morning due to injury. Oh, Michelle. Why do we waste so much press on you?

  • Boston's finest, Marco Sturm, Bruins forward, also withdrew from the games due to injury.

  • Gold!Though I rarely pay attention to who wins, the US has it's first Gold in '06 -- Chad Hedrick will take home the metal in 5,000-meter long-track speedskating. For those who don't know, the 28-year-old Texan had never competed on ice until three years ago. Known in the world of (non-Olympic) inline skating (read: rollerblading), Hedrick was inspired to switch gears after seeing a friend in the '02 games (or at least that's what Bob Costas told me). Yay for Chad. He has a very sexy southern drawl and is pretty cute to boot, therefore he deserves to be a hero.

  • My favorite Olympic event, curling (don't you laugh), hits the ice Monday. Sweet!

So there you have your 20sum Olympic Wrap-Up. What did you think of the opening ceremonies? What is your favorite event? Who is your favorite hot Olympian?

I liked the opening ceremonies but there really wasn't anything that stood out for me except for those Alps trumpeters. I couldn't help but shout out "Ricola" a couple times.

As much as I would have liked Michele Kwan to have gotten her gold, I didn't feel that she deserved to be there. It's sad, but I'm glad that she withdrew. But I will be watching Men's Hockey if I take the time to find out when it comes on. (It hasn't already occured has it? *hopes not*)

I like Bode Miller before the games started, but I have dumped him for Chad Hedrick. While he was doing his interview, he was all smiles and nice. He seems like a real good guy. I'd rather see a guy like that than one like Bode.

I haven't had the time as of late to watch more than a couple events. Which is sad. I enjoy the athleticism, so awe-inspiring. I actually got excited at the women's snowboard tourney.
