In 1992, I discover Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's a brief, intense, and unhealthy obsession, mostly with trading cards. The show is kind of over my head. But I liked that robot guy. He was cool.

My sister, Marissa, is born in April, during one of the final episodes of The Golden Girls. I miss the ep -- the one where Rose has a stroke or something -- and have never seen it, to this day. I still resent the little girl. (Weeks later, I would sob at the show's swan song. Oh, pussycat!)

On a 6th Grade class trip to Washington DC, in a subway station, I am propositioned by my first prostitute -- a very large black man who offered to suck my eleven-year-old dick for cash. I am told by my chaperone to forget it every happened -- so I just stare in awe at all the big, beautiful subway posters of the upcoming Batman Returns.

My "non-gay" (at the time) love of Madonna deepens with the release of "Deeper & Deeper" off of Erotica. My mother, whom turned me onto the Material Girl when I was three or four, turns on the singer and hates her because of her "slutty image." (My mother also intensely hates Stevie Nicks, but for very different reasons.)

At 11, I still play with action figures in my bedroom. I stage one particuarly lavish adventure involving the Justice League, the X-Men, and the Ninja Turtles. They must stop a world-domination plot mounted by Magneto and Titanium Man (just like the Paul McCartney song). Which revolves around... wait for it... an En Vouge concert................. I soon learn to masturbate and end this pre-gay superhero play.

Remember Wayne's World? I do. I make a mix tape at my dad's work -- he's a DJ -- that features Tia Carrera's "Ballroom Blitz" cover from the film, Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time," and Celine Dion's "Beauty & The Beast," among others. I listen to it so much that the tape wears itself out.

The beginning of 7th Grade heralds Move #3 of the 90s -- this time to Claremont, NH. I dislike middle school, but I'm happy that our new house finally has Fox on it's cable system -- Both Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men debut on Fox Kids in '92. No wonder I have a hard time making friends at my new school.

My Songs of the Year:

What frightens me a little bit is while you were 11 and I would have been 18, I know I would have played action figures with you....and I can only hope I wouldn't have tried to proposition your 11 year old ass....

The "Real Love" by Mary J. Blige reference brought back some great memories. I'd recorded the music video, and my friend Jason and I tried to figure out the dance the fly girls in the background were doing. I remember us even going to a sporting goods store and looking at knee pads so that we could look like the dancers in the video. Wow. We were messed up.

I loved Tia's "Ballroom Blitz" !!!I wish we could have lived in the same town (and been closer in age) because then NH would've have been so lonely. From the sounds of it, we probably would have hooked up, too, but at least we could've worshipped En Vogue together.Jaimie
