90s-Something

Inspired by VH1's I Love The 90s Part Deux a few weeks back, I reflected upon my own experiences during the decade and wrote them up. I'm posting them now... every so often.

My mother gets pregnant and married to my unbeknownst-to-me-at-the-time birth father. We move to a new town near New Hampshire and my brother, Alex, is born in September. We do not appear on Ricki Lake.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are my favorite band. Yes, I said band. I see them in concert and even write them a fan letter -- to which they write back.

* * *

My first magazine subscription is Disney Adventures. I am obsessed with The Disney Afternoon, particularly Tailspin.

* * *

My mother picks me up from my new school listening to The B-52's Cosmic Thing loudly and singing. At the time, I am mortified. Now, I think that's pretty damn cool.

I cry alone in the bathroom of my fifth grade classroom. Every day. For a good two weeks.

Said "step"-father brings with him a large collection of comic books. I relish in back issues of virtually every Marvel title from the 70s and 80s. I become obsessed with Spider-Man.

Songs of the Year:
"Count on Us" by the Ninja Turtles
"Groove Is in The Heart" by Deee-lite
Anything from Madonna's I'm Breathless album

I wish I had the memory you did....I was 9 in 1982, I think all I really remember is MTV launching sometime around then....playing HotWheels, GI Joe, and watching SpiderFriends and the Smurfs on Saturday morning cartoons....oh, and my friend Todd Crawforth that pee'ed the bed at 9 years old. I always felt bad for him.
